The team of Build4People Work Package #5 »Urban Climate« is currently working on producing an urban climate map of Phnom Penh capital with the purpose of deriving evidence-based recommendations for more sustainable urban development pathway.
To collect weather data, researchers from Royal University of Phnom Penh installed several automatic weather stations (AWSs) in and around the capital city in order to measure weather conditions through its parameters, including temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind speed and direction, solar radiation and atmospheric pressure (see figure below).
To completely install ASWs, additional materials are required including memory card, sim card, metal pole, chargeable batteries and so on. To be safe, AWSs were installed on and attached to the rooftop of the building such as house or school (see figure below).
As of now, five AWSs have been already installed within Phnom Penh, located in the districts of Tuol Kork, Dangkao, Pou Senchey, Chamkar Mon and Russei Keo (see figure below).
Three AWSs will soon be installed in the districts of Chbar Ampov, Pou Senchey, and Prek Phnov. In those case the Build4People team is in the process of requesting locations owners for AWSs installation. The AWSs represent both urbanized and suburban areas as it is necessary to observe characteristics and conditions of all of those areas.
The complete weather data including temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind speed and direction, solar radiation and atmospheric pressure have been automatically uploaded on the weather underground website (e.g., see here: https://www.wunderground.com/dashboard/pws/IPHNOM26) and recorded in the SD card attached in the base station. These parameters have been observed and used to analyze differently based on their indications and characteristics. All of these data are very essential in regard of a proper urban climate analysis and the subsequent elaboration of urban development recommendation.
Hereby, Build4People lead would like to express its deep gratitude to the RUPP team of Bunleng Se, Nyda Chhinh and Daniel Choi for their dedicated support!
