SURE Conference: from Research to Implementation Sustainable Urban Development in Southeast and East Asia
December 16th and 17th 2025 – Bangkok, Thailand

The SURE funding priority conferenc united German and Southeast Asian partners and facilitated dialogue between the SURE collaborative projects. The event was a milestone in our joint journey, dedicated to the next phase of the SURE funding priority, the Implementation Phase.

The conference centred around products, methods and strategies of sustainable urban and peri-urban development, providing opportunities to showcase the projects, introduce new partners, share research goals, and receive valuable feedback from peers. During the conference days participants exchanged on implementation tools, established practices, and community-structure challenges, while forming collaboration alliances and outlining follow-up actions to ensure sustained engagement and progress.

Keynotes speakers at the conference:

  • Kotchakorn Voraakhom, CEO and Founder LANDPROCESS and Porous CIty Network

  • Srinivasa Popuri, Chief UN-Habitat Bangkok Programme Office

Project Presentations included the SURE projects PolyUrbanWaters, Myrisk, Build4People, CHARMS, IMECOGIP, GreenCityLabHue, FloodAdaptVN and SURE F&SR.

The SURE Atlas, a web-based tool for the interactive exploration of the multifaceted landscape of the SURE projects was launched at the conference and all the projects showcased their products, tools, and solutions during a collaborative market square session.

Accompanying the conference, we celebrated the book launch of the recently published book Navigating Urban Development – Learnings from East and Southeast Asia where all the SURE projects contributed to.

SURE Kick-Off Event

On 29th April 2021, the kick-off event of the funding priority SURE – Sustainable Development of Urban Regions – took place. The funding priority focuses on sustainable urban development and resilient infrastructure building in Southeast Asia and China. The funding priority was initiated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of the Research for Sustainability Strategy (FONA Strategy).

SURE Status Seminar 2022

The SURE status seminar takes a snapshot of the ongoing research and elevates sustainable urban transformation discourse. The session takes stock of global, regional and local pathways and strategies for multisectoral collaboration to build transformative urban-rural adaptation and resilience for sustainable futures. Eminent researchers frame the event and provide a global perspective on sustainable transformation trends and pathways for cities.
