The Citizen Science App is a free digital tool developed as part of the Build4People Transformation Toolbox.
It serves two main purposes: (1) as a scientific diagnostic tool and (2) as a tool for public participation.
At the beginning of the Build4People Implementation Phase (2025–2027), the app was handed over to the IT Department of the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP), Build4People’s most important scientific partner and Cambodia’s largest public university.
Since then, the app has been widely used by our scientific colleagues at RUPP for various research purposes. These include assessing residents’ subjective perceptions of thermal comfort as part of broader research on urban climate and urban heat islands, as well as measuring residents’ self-assessed quality of life in Phnom Penh.
Furthermore, the Phnom Penh Capital Administration is currently preparing to use the B4P Citizen Science App to assess citizens’ perceptions of urban green spaces and public parks.
Rapid urbanisation in Phnom Penh has contributed to the loss and degradation of green spaces, with potential implications for the urban environment, residents’ well-being, public health, and overall quality of life. Understanding how citizens perceive and value urban green spaces can therefore provide important insights for more informed urban planning and sustainable urban transformation.
In this way, the B4P Citizen Science App aims to capture residents’ perspectives on urban green infrastructure (UGI) and quality of life, while strengthening public participation and contributing to more sustainable and people-centred urban development in Phnom Penh.
